Putting the Public Back In Public Safety

Our platform

Our current system of policing is inefficient and ineffective. Every St. Louisan, including me, has been affected by violence. Too many of our conversations in person or online are filled with fear. We have not taken care of our city, and therefore, we are failing at our response to crime. St. Louis suffers from neighborhood disinvestment, poor mental health services, low officer morale, and strained community relations with law enforcement. The city must reject the false choice between being “tough” on crime and addressing the root causes of violence.

We must address the small groups responsible for the large percentage of violent crimes. Officers are spending too much time responding to routine calls instead of addressing violent crime. We must invest in resources that will actually make us safer, such as treatment for substance abuse and mental health disorders, programs that help lift people out of poverty, and meaningful criminal justice reforms. As mayor, I’ve worked to prioritize:

➪ A Community-First Public Safety Plan

Triaging 9-1-1 Calls and Sending the Right Professional

Decarceration and reducing barriers to re-entry

Police Retention

➪ Community-Police Relations

Substance Abuse services

Improving Our EMS, Fire, and Police Departments

Our record

Oversaw a dramatic 26% decrease in homicides from 2021 to 2022, spurred forward by community deterrence

We won the battle for local control of our police department, preventing a state takeover of local St. Louis police.

➪ Implemented Cops and Clinicians project, which pair officers with licensed social workers.

➪ signed an Executive Order banning the use of “no-knock warrants” in executing a police search.

➪ Joined the Community Violence Initiative in collaboration with the Biden Administration and other national municipal leaders.

➪ Worked alongside Everytown for Gun Safety, Moms Demand Action, and local leaders to develop innovative and community-based strategies for making our neighborhoods safer.

➪ Signed BB132, repealing outdated and predatory marijuana laws, making our city more competitive in hiring and helping to eliminate racial disparities in our justice system.

➪ Hired Police Chief Tracy, bringing deep experience in crime reduction techniques and a commitment to community policing and engagement
